Why pine needles?

Every basket begins with a little bit of Maine magic—and a whole lot of patience. The Penobscot Indian Nation is well known for its beautiful basket-making traditions, and my grandfather, Socolexis Newell, was a gifted basket maker and storyteller. He traveled from town to town selling his wares, sharing a good story wherever he went.

I inherited his love of making things by hand, along with a fondness for a tale or two. While many Native American basket makers work with willow and seagrass, I weave with pine needles. They bring the fresh, woodsy scent of Maine to each basket—and make every piece feel like a small walk through the forest.

So please, enjoy your basket. Fill it with treasures, memories, or whatever makes you smile, and may it be loved for generations to come.
